Beginning in January, Chartiers Township will be self-performing our community’s residential curbside recycling.  We will still be collecting recyclables beginning the Second Monday of each month and carrying on until we can collect the entire Township.   We will be starting on Monday, January 13^th  and continuing through the Township.  We ask for everyone’s patience as we begin providing this service and learn and establish how long it will take to work through the residential areas of the Township.  We are anticipating 2 days, but please understand that until we work through the process a few months, there will be delays and it may take longer than expected.  We will do our best to meet the 2 day schedule on the map provided, but until we actually perform the tasks, we just don’t know if that is feasible.  To start, anticipate that if you are West of the high school/Arnold Park, plan for Monday, if you are East of the high school/Arnold Park plan for Tuesday. Additionally, since safety and clearing the roads are our Public Works Department’s first priority, if we have snow event, collection will be delayed that week while they tend to the roads. We will try to update residents as our schedule becomes clearer.   

Generally, the recycling rules have stayed the same, but as a refresher here are some core concepts: 

• Recyclables must be in a clearly marked “RECYCLE” receptacle.  It does not have to be the Township standard bin, but it must be marked.
• Recyclables in plastic / garbage bags will NOT be picked up. NO PLASTIC BAGS in the bin or containing recyclables.
• All recyclables can be in the same container
• Keep liquid and food out of your recyclables/ recycling container
• The following are accepted recyclables:

  • Flattened Cardboard and Paper
  • Food and Beverage Cans

The Township has scheduled curbside leaf collection for the following MONDAYS.:

October 21st
October 28th
November 4th
November 18th
November 25th (if necessary
*NOTE: NO collection on Monday, November 11th as it is Veterans' Day

Please remember that the leaves MUST be in biodegradable bags! Non-biodegradable material in the bags will prevent the Township from being able to recycle the leaves through the composting site, so PLEASE make sure your bags contain leaves only. DO NOT TAPE THE BAGS. They will NOT be picked up if they are taped.

Try to have your bags to the curb by the preceding Sunday evening to make sure they are out in time for Monday morning's collection. Contact the Township with any questions or post them as comment because others may have the same questions. THANK YOU for your cooperation in helping to make this program a success!!!!

Chartiers Township will be sponsoring  an Electronics Recycling Event for Chartiers Township Residents ONLY on Monday, October 21, 2019 at the Chartiers Township Community Center, 2013 Community Center Drive, Houston, PA 15342. 

RESIDENTS MUST SHOW A DRIVER’S LICENSE AS PROOF OF RESIDENCY. 

This will be a satellite event for the Washington County Electronics Recycling Program and will follow those parameters as outlined below.  Most electronics are FREE with the exceptions indicated below.  These are the amounts that the vendor charges the Township. The Township can accept cash or checks for the applicable fees.  Please make note items that can NOT be recycled. Please take advantage of this opportunity to recycle electronic items.

For the last two years the only vendor who would even provide a quote to do a curbside bulk collection has been unable to collect volume of junk the Township has had in a day, weekend or even week. It has come to the point that it has taken the hauler nearly a month to collect everything, leaving piles of debris in residents’ yards and creating more mess and quite frankly a health hazard. Chartiers Township has grown to the point that the tonnage of debris our clean up day generates is too much for even the largest of haulers to collect. Last year it was nearly 400 tons of debris and has just become to much for even the largest of haulers to collect in a day or weekend. That is why we looked at moving to a drop off program, as most of our neighboring communities do. It was in no way an indication of the Township’s unwillingness to continue the program nor cost. It was a merely a logistical issue and the size and volume of the program outgrowing capacity to do it. Hearing the understandable concerns of residents regarding the drop off program, we again reached out to the hauler to see if there is any method by which they could do a curbside collection. They agreed to try a week-long, weekday collection.

The 2018 Chartiers Township Spring Clean Up Day will be Saturday, May 19, 2018

The following items WILL NOT be picked up, so please don't place them out:

1. auto tires

2. automobile parts

3. dirt, bricks, stones and concrete

4. refrigerators, air-conditions units and appliances which have not been certified for removal of chlorofluorocarbons.

5. cans exceeding in 40 lbs.

6. carpet not cut-(must be bundled and tied in 4’ lengths)

7. paint-liquid

8. E-Waste material: electronic devices and items

It is the responsibility of the property owner to maintain unobstructed, safe access to refuse being collected. Remember they arrive early so have your items to the curb the night before.
